THE LITTLE BAROQUE CHURCH

IN THE CENTER OF VARENNA

Inaugurated on September 8, 1685, it was built partly with the inheritance of the parish priest Don Andrea Ambrosoni and partly by the Arrigoni family who boasted the right to Juspatronato. Dedicated to S. Maria Maddalena, it also bore the title in honor of S. Antonio da Padova. Inside this baroque church you can find statues and paintings of strong cultural, artistic and religious importance, coming from various historical periods. The baroque altar, made of gilded wood with two large spiral columns, comes from Villa Monastero.

DISCOVER THE INTERIOR

On the tympanum, you can see three angels depicted. The Lord figured in the centre could instead belong to the polyptych located in the church of San Giorgio.
In the niche, you can see a gilded wooden statue of the Madonna with the Child in her arms. This representation of the late 16th century could date back to a previous altar.

In the four niches of the small nave of the Oratory, you can admire the Baroque statues depicting the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, S. Teresa d’Avila, S. Gertrude and S. Eurosia.

In a beautiful baroque frame, you can find the painting ofpainting of S. Maria Maddalena an unknown work dating back to the 1700s. The Saint wears a pale pink dress and is represented in prayer while an angel holds the Crucifix and two others fly in the sky.

In the church, there is another canvas depicting St. Anthony on his knees. He is praying to the Virgin holding the Child with a generic landscape in the background. This canvas also works by the unknown and from the 1700s.

The Church can be visited on request. For information, contact the parish priest.
